Course introduction

Introduction


The Preparatory Course is designed to prepare international students to sit for the Admission Exercise for International Students (AEIS) Test to gain admission into a Government Primary or Secondary Schools. The AEIS Test is conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore.  The AEIS Test involves a centralized test on English and Mathematics and is held in September/ October of each year. International students who are successful in the AEIS Test will be assigned by Ministry of Education to join a Singapore Government School in January of the following year.
The Primary education in Singapore is a 6-year program which students will sit for the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) at the end of Primary 6.  Successful students will progress to do the Secondary education.
International students who missed or failed the AEIS Test conducted in Sep/Oct may sit for the Supplementary Admission Exercise for International Students (S-AEIS) Test in February / March of the following year. From 2013 onwards, the S-AEIS Test will not cater for Primary 5 and Secondary 3 levels.
Applicants who have taken part in AEIS Test previously and were unsuccessful may apply to take AEIS Test again at the same or higher level, subject to MOE Terms and Conditions.

Programme Structure

Area of Studies


The course consists of 2 (two) subjects taught accordingly to MOE syllabus:

  • English
  • Mathematics
ENGLISH

Synopsis for Primary 1
The Primary 1 English class is aimed at enabling students to acquire foundational skills, particularly in grammar, spelling and basic pronunciation. The students will attain a good level of competency of both spoken and written English. It helps to cultivate using English as a medium of communication. Upon passing the Primary 1 AEIS/SAEIS exam, students will be posted to Primary 2 mainstream schools.

Synopsis for Primary 2
The Primary 2 English class is aimed at enabling students to acquire foundational skills, particularly in grammar, spelling and basic pronunciation. The students will attain a good level of competency of both spoken and written English. It helps to cultivate using English as a medium of communication. Upon passing the Primary 2 AEIS/SAEIS exam, students will be posted to Primary 3 mainstream schools.

MATHEMATICS

Synopsis for Primary 1
The Primary 1 Mathematics class is aimed at enabling students to acquire Mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in Mathematics. It also aims at developing thinking, reasoning, communication and application through a mathematical approach to problem solving. More importantly, it aims to build confidence and foster interest in Mathematics itself. Topics including numbers to 100, counting, writing numbers, comparing, ordering, number bonds, addition, subtraction, naming positions, shapes, story sums, length, patterns, time, multiplication and division will be taught progressively to the students. These are the Primary 1 topics belonging to the latest MOE mathematics syllabus. As such, this class will prepare the students for the Primary 1 AEIS exam. Upon passing the examination, they will be posted to Primary 2 mainstream schools.

Synopsis for Primary 2
The Primary 2 Mathematics class is aimed at enabling students to acquire Mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in Mathematics. It also aims to develop the thinking, reasoning, communication and application of learners through a mathematical approach to problem solving. More importantly, it aims to build confidence and foster interest in Mathematics itself. Topics including numbers to 1000, word problems, 2 step word problems, hundreds, tens and ones, addition, subtraction, mass, length, time, money, fractions, volumes, picture graphs, geometry and patterns will be taught progressively to the students.  These are the Primary 2 topics belonging to the  latest MOE mathematics syllabus.  As such, this class will prepare the students for the Primary 2 AEIS exam. Upon passing the examination, they will be posted to Primary 3 mainstream schools.



Entry Requirements


Age: 7 – 9 years old
Academic: At Primary 1 or equivalent
English Proficiency: At least Primary 1 proficiency in English or equivalent
