What to Look out for in a Degree Programme

Article on - What to Look out for in a Degree Programme

Whether you want to go back to school after a long time in the corporate world, or are a fresh A-Level recipient sorting through the brochures and websites, which degree programme you pick is a huge decision deserving of appropriate consideration.

While we cannot provide a one size fits all answer to what you should be looking for in higher education, you should consider the following:

  1. What do you enjoy learning?

Ultimately, you don’t want to be stuck studying something you hate, no matter how lucrative or prestigious it is. This is especially true for those heading to their first degree – you want to make it count! Don’t let the opinions of others sway you and examine your own inclinations instead. What do you want to study and explore? That will point you in the right direction.

  1. What are your existing credentials?

On the other hand, if you’re coming from the corporate world, you probably have a few years of experience under your belt. In which case, how will the degree augment your existing experience and ability? You want to find a programme that gives you even more of an edge than you already have, so be sure to check the curriculum thoroughly to see if it fits.

  1. What are the pros and cons for this degree?

Do a pros’ and cons’ list for all the degree options you’re considering, and you’ll be surprised at how clear things become. Sometimes, a single thing can push a certain programming out of the running – or conversely, show you that it’s really the only one for you.

  1. What will you need to commit?

How many hours of tutorials, lectures and study time are involved, and can you spare them? Do you want to go full-time or part-time. Don’t just think of the end point, carefully consider how much you need to commit to get there, and whether you can spare the resources.

  1. Where will this degree take you?

Finally, let yourself imagine for a moment: “when I have this degree, I will be…?” Does the answer to that question fit with your career path, your aspirations and your ideals? Check the modules on offer to see if they are in-line with what you want to learn and where you want to go. It’s also important to look at internships, overseas exposure, or other benefits on offer and if they connect with what you want for your education goals.

Choosing a degree isn’t easy, but it can be simplified. Take your time to decide and enjoy your learning!
