Sustainable procurement is crucial for the economy as it promotes long-term environmental, social, and economic benefits. It enhances resource efficiency, reduces environmental impact, and supports a circular economy by minimising waste and optimising the use of materials. Additionally, sustainable procurement fosters innovation, drives market demand for eco-friendly products and services, and encourages businesses to adopt responsible practices. It also helps mitigate supply chain risks, and enhance cost savings through improved efficiency and reduced waste. 

This course trains learners to be competent in managing an Environmental Management System (EMS) and sustainable procurement supply chain in their organisations.

Target Audience

Course Outline

Participants will learn through lectures, case studies, group exercises and discussions. There will be two methods of assessment at the end of the course comprising of a written test and a case study assessment.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to: 

• Review environmental policies and procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements  
• Adapt environmental and resource efficiency improvement plans to industry standards  
• Develop utility and transportation efficiency plans  
• Develop and integrate organisation’s sustainability plans to drive commitment to environmental protection and sustainability  
• Develop assessment criteria for sustainable and ethical sourcing which has minimal adverse environmental impacts  
• Develop EMS policies, objectives and frameworks according to requirements and specifications 
• Topics to be covered in this course include: 
• Methods, practices, tools and techniques of sustainability management in logistics 
• Legislations, regulations and codes of practice including resource hazards and risks associated with work areas, job specifications and procedures 
• Green Procurement – ethical and sustainable environmental sourcing  
• Concept of EMS
