Course introduction

Introduction


Aligned to the Singapore Workforce Development Agency's Workforce Skills Qualification (CI WSQ) Creative Industries WSQ framework, Singapore Media Academy is proud to offer the WSQ Diploma in Film & Television (Script).

Developed and delivered by industry practitioners, this WSQ Diploma aims to equip the participants with the fundamental skills of writing different types of stories and scripts for Film and Television production.

CERTIFICATE

Participants will receive a WSQ Statement of Attainment (SOA) upon successful completion of each unit and its assessment.

Completion of all the required units will qualify candidates for the WSQ Diploma in Film & Television (Script) under the Creative Industries Workforce Skills Qualification (CI WSQ) framework.

Participants will also receive a Certificate of Attendance issued by Singapore Media Academy for each unit completed.

COURSE UNITS

The WSQ Diploma in Film & Television (Script) consists of 7 units of study.

UNIT 1-
WRITE A NARRATIVE SCRIPT
This unit focuses on writing a narrative script for film and television drama. Participants will learn to develop a story idea and write a script that has commercial and/or artistic potential by identifying the theme of the story, developing creative plots and compelling characters. This unit will also have an emphasis on learning how to write evocative action and descriptors, develop effective and appropriate dialogue, as well as a suitable pace for the story.
UNIT 2-
ADMINISTER AND MANAGE THE USE OF LICENSED COPYRIGHT MATERIALS CREATED
This unit covers the administration and management of copyrighted materials created by others. The skills include applying the fundamental concepts of copyright; identifying the owners of copyrighted materials; acquiring the permission needed to use these materials and ensuring that users know how they could use the materials in compliance with the agreement set out and agreed with the owners.
UNIT 3-
WRITE A DOCUMENTARY SCRIPT
This unit gives participants a clear understanding of the various documentary modes and formats, learn how to conceptualise a compelling documentary, conduct research, devise a plot structure for the script and write the documentary script.
UNIT 4-
MANAGE COMMUNICATION IN A CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT
This unit covers managing communications within the creative and technical teams as well as contractors/sub contractors and general public. It involves understanding that people have different communication styles and adapting communication style to be more readily understood. It involves understanding how to negotiate, how to communicate with tact and reach agreements which are acceptable to the work. The unit also covers issues of confidentiality, treating others courteously and being self aware.
UNIT 5-
WRITE A SITCOM SCRIPT
This unit focuses on writing for a situational comedy (sitcom), with an emphasis on technical knowledge and how to use tools and methods to create humourous situations and dialogue. Participants will acquire the basic know-how in developing a concept for a sitcom pilot, creating a story for an episode, and writing an episodic script.
UNIT 6-
ADDRESS PROBLEMS WHICH IMPACT ON THE WORK
This unit covers gathering information about a problem and looking for possible solutions, making recommendations for decisions as appropriate for implementation, implementing the solution and reviewing the effectiveness of the solution.
UNIT 7-
MAINTAIN WORKPLACE SAFETY AND HEALTH POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
This unit focuses on the individual workplaces’ need to identify competencies required to address industry-specific and occupation-specific workplace safety and health issues, for example, particular hazards, where these differ from, or build on, the generic competencies.
 



Area of Studies


ASSESSMENT

All units will conclude with a compulsory assessment component.

Assessments may include role plays, quizzes, assignments, projects, and written examinations.

Participants need to achieve at least 75% attendance for each unit before they are allowed to sit for the assessment.



Entry Requirements


Minimum Age: 18

  • Academic Requirement: Obtain Pass Grade in GCE N-Level subjects including English* (at least Grade 4 or IELTS overall band score 5.5 and above or equivalent) and 1 other subject or equivalent
  • For applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements may still apply and will be considered based on:
  1. At least 1 year working experience in any industry; and/or
  2. Oral interview or evaluation test by Singapore Media Academy to determine suitability for the course
