Area of Studies


Foundations in Accountancy suite of awards comprise of certificates and diplomas, as well as a technician level qualification. Exams and awards include: 

1 Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting
It comprises of two exams and a professionalism and ethics module (6 months – Full-Time / Part-Time)
Paper Synopsis
FA1 Recording Financial Transactions The aim of paper FA1 Recording Financial Transactions is to develop knowledge and understanding of the main types of business transactions and documentation and how these are recorded in an accounting system up to the trial balance stage.
MA1 Management Information The aim of paper MA1 Management Information is to develop knowledge and understanding of providing basic management information in an organisation to support management in planning and decision-making

2 Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting
It comprises of two exams and a professionalism and ethics module (6 months – Full-Time / Part-Time)
FA2 Maintaining Financial Records The aim of paper FA2 Maintaining Financial Records is to to develop knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and concepts relating to Maintaining Financial Records and technical proficiency in the use of double-entry accounting techniques including the preparation of basic financial statements.
MA2 Managing Costs and Finance The aim of paper MA2 Managing Costs and Finance is to develop knowledge and understanding of how to prepare, process and present basic cost information to support management in planning and decision-making in a variety of business contexts.

 3 Diploma in Accounting and Business
It comprises of three exams and a professionalism and ethics module (18 months – Full-Time / 24 months – Part-Time)
FAB Accountant in Business The aim of paper FAB Accountant in Business is to introduce knowledge and understanding of the business and its environment and the influence this has on how organisations are structured and on the role of accounting and other key business functions in contributing to the efficient, effective and ethical management and development of an organisation and its people and systems.
FMA Management Accounting The aim of paper FMA Management Accounting is to develop knowledge and understanding of management accounting techniques to support management in planning, controlling and monitoring performance in a variety of business contexts.
FFA Financial Accounting The aim of paper FFA Financial Accounting is to develop knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and concepts relating to financial accounting and technical proficiency in the use of double-entry accounting techniques including the preparation of basic financial statements for single entities and simple groups. The syllabus also introduces basic techniques of interpretation of financial statements.

4 Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Foundation Certificates #(All the 7 papers above, plus 2 out of the following 3 option papers)
Course: Preparatory Course for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Examination (18 months  – Full Time /  24 months – Part-Time)
FAU Foundations in AuditCourse: Preparatory Course for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Foundation Certificate in Audit (6 months – Full-Time / Part-Time) The aim of paper FAU Foundations in Audit is to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of external audit and the audit process and technical proficiency in the skills used for auditing financial statements.
FTX Foundations in TaxationCourse: Preparatory Course for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Foundations in Taxation (6 months – Full-Time / Part-Time) Paper FTX Foundations in Taxation introduces candidates to the subject of taxation and provides the core knowledge of the underlying principles and the major technical areas of taxation, as they affect the activities of individuals and businesses, at a level appropriate for someone working at technician level.
FFM Foundations in Financial ManagementCourse: Preparatory Course for Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Foundations in Financial Management (6 months – Full-Time / Part-Time) The aim of paper FFM Foundations in Financial Management is to develop knowledge and understanding of ways organisations finance their operations, plan and control cash flows, optimise their use of working capital and allocate resources to long term investment projects.
*Foundations in Professionalism
* Foundations in Professionalism is an online interactive module that needs to be completed only once via the ACCA website.

# Each Options Paper can be taken as a Foundation Certificate in order to be awarded the FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE IN AUDIT, FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE IN FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT and FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE IN TAXATION. The Foundations in Professionalism module must also be completed

If you have no prior accounting qualifications, we recommend you begin with the first award – the Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting. This award is broadly equivalent to GCSE level and you can work your way through the rest of the qualifications from this starting point



Entry Requirements


Minimum 16 years old, plus

  • IELTS 4.5 or pass in English language at GCE ‘N’ level or its equivalent
  • The flexibility of FIA gives students a wide choice about the level of programme at which you could register. It is important that you pick the right qualification to maximise your chances of success.
For local students, we strongly encourage those without prior qualifications or experience to begin at Certificate level.

For international students, you are required to register for the full CAT programme from Introductory Certificate, with the option to progress to ACCA after completion of Diploma. Only international students with relevant academic qualifications in Accountancy may enter at Intermediate Certificate or Diploma level.

Students with relevant qualifications from a recognised institution may be eligible to claim for exemptions from papers within Foundations in Accountancy.
