Introduction


The Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management aims to develop the skills and knowledge of managing in both the Tourism and Hospitality Industries. It provides students with a broad understanding of the operational aspects of these two industries with in-depth studies. This course considers both industries and equips the students with all the know-how of these industries.



Curriculum Overview


Programme Structure


In the domain of Tourism, students will be prepared for careers in all aspect of the vast and varied industry, from commercial tour operations to government oversight of national tourism activity. In the domain of Hospitality, the same group of students will also gain knowledge in the management of all manners of hotels, ranging from small family-run operations to major international chains. They will be provided with the opportunity to have a clear understanding of the demands and opportunities in these two industries.
Being groomed for executive positions, graduates can choose to work in virtually any service sector, from leisure to hospitality and recreation. Many will find employment with tourism organizations, hotels, clubs, resorts, airlines, tour operations, retail and leisure attractions as well as businesses dealing with food services, cruises, events management, entertainment promotion, and exhibitions and conventions. With the knowledge and skills of these industries, graduates will then be valuable assets of companies they join.

Module Synopsis:

The Global Hospitality Industry
The aim of this module is to provide students with a broad introduction into the complex world of hospitality and tourism business operations. It provides an overview of the separate functions and activities that concern managers in modern businesses. This module reflects modern concerns of hospitality and tourism business operations.
 
Marketing in Tourism & Hospitality
The aim of this module is to equip students with an understanding of the principles of marketing as they apply to the industry and offers a framework for a more effective marketing strategy approach for the industry. Students will be introduced to a marketing function of the organisation and develop marketing theories from customer motivation to product development. The focus is on how organisation identify the needs of their target markets, understand the buying behaviour of their target markets, and develop a marketing mix (comprising products, price, promotion and placement) to satisfy the needs and wants of these markets. While the course has a theoretical base, practical application of the concepts of marketing to real world situations is an essential element.
 
Introduction to Tourism
The aim of this module is to engage students to understand tourism as a business, and how to manage tourism operations. It covers the themes, concepts and issues of tourism, reviewing the historical development of tourism, the tourism demand, as well as tourism motivation. Students will also learn about the tourism market segments and then discuss the economic, social and cultural and environmental impacts. Finally, the module explores the future of tourism.
 
Business System & Operations
The aim of this module is to provide students with a broad introduction into the complex world of hospitality and tourism business operations. It provides an overview of the separate functions and activities that concern managers in modern businesses. This module reflects modern concerns of hospitality and tourism business operations.
 
Food & Beverage Service Operations
The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the operational and supervisory aspects of running a food and beverage operations for an international clientele in a range of establishments. This will encourage an appreciation of the origins of such systems and to understand the various factors involved in meeting customer needs. Students will gain an understanding of food and wine and its services in a variety of styles of restaurants and establishments and they will have sufficient knowledge to produce a detailed plan for specified food and beverage operations.
 
Front Office Operations
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the systems and procedures required for Front Office Operations. It emphasizes the importance of high standards in personal qualities and the provision of customer service. Students will develop knowledge and skills in reception procedures as well as understanding the key legislation that relates to reception procedures. They will also evaluate the suitability of different procedures for a range of hospitality outlets.
 
Housekeeping Management
The aim of this module is to enable students to examine concepts of housekeeping management in the hospitality industry. One of the principle goals of housekeeping is to serve the needs of guests by providing appropriate care for their accommodation and for other areas in the lodging property.
 
Industrial Attachment
Coleman College recognizes an important aspect in education is about gaining professional skills in a relevant workplace. As such, several of our certificate and diploma courses provide opportunities for students to gain valuable workplace skills from our arrangement for industrial attachments at relevant workplaces where students are placed in organizations within the tourism and hospitality and related establishments for a period of 6 months after completion of their institutional studies. Students are expected to have successfully completed all modules (institutional) before they proceed to the 6-month Industrial Attachment. For this course, the industrial attachment is compulsory and has to be completed successfully before they are awarded the Diploma. In cases where the students are unable to obtain the Training Work Pass from the Ministry of Manpower for the Industrial Attachment, they are required to complete a project work (project paper) to be awarded the Diploma.
 



Entry Requirements


Age: Age 17 years old
Academic: At least 3 subject passes with Grade C6 and above at GCE ‘O’ level OR
Completed 10 years of formal education OR equivalent
English Proficiency: IELTS 4.5 or equivalent

The course duration is 12 months
Full Time: (6 months of Institutional study and 6 months of Industrial Attachment)
Maximum allowed period for the student to complete the course is 18 months
