Introduction


The BSc Banking Practice and Management degree is designed to cater for a variety of different requirements including those starting out in a management career in financial services, particularly in retail and commercial banking. It provides essential core knowledge of the industry, the external environment in which it operates and the interaction between the two.

The BSc Banking Practice and Management degree is designed to cater for a variety of different requirements including those starting out in a management career in financial services, particularly in retail and commercial banking.  It provides essential core knowledge of the industry, the external environment in which it operates and the interaction between the two. 

As the programme develops at Level 5 this is a professional qualification for people working or aspiring to work in the financial services industry.  It covers an array of topics that include:

  • The relationship between an organization and its individual stakeholders
  • The different roles within the financial services industry
  • The needs of customers; and
  • How to measure performance effectively
The final stage is also a professional qualification that provides expert knowledge and skills required to enhance career prospects.  The core module, Strategic Management in Financial Services, will take students through a variety of topics, including strategic management concepts and skills with reference to case studies and empirical evidence.  The option modules encompass a range of subjects, allowing students to focus their studies to support their own career path.

The overall aim of the BS in Banking Practice and Management is to
  • Provide students with opportunities to investigate and analyse a range of issues relating to the practice and management of banking and the wider financial services sector.
  • Encourage students to reflect on and engage in academic and practitioner debate on issues relevant to banking, financial markets and the financial services sector in general.
  • Enable students to apply specialised, up-to-date knowledge within specific areas of the banking sector, utilising a work based learning approach where relevant.
  • Develop student’s ability to identify customer needs and expectations and to manage provision of services to them.
  • Increase student’s awareness of the importance of strategic, moral/ethical, social, economic and environmental issues within the banking sector in general.
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop the necessary skills and competencies to move on to further study within the discipline and to develop professionalism in the context of a banking sector managerial role.



Area of Studies


On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

  • The range of organisations in the banking sector, the wider financial services institutional framework within which they operate, and the products and services they deliver.
  • The processes, procedures and practices required for the effective management and governance of banking organisations within the financial services sector.
  • Subject-specific theories, empirical evidence and concepts relating to banking and financial services generally and how these apply in a practical work environment.
  • Financial services, markets and banking practice as evolving disciplines that need to respond to the constantly changing legal and regulatory environment.



Entry Requirements


Minimum Age
At least 18 years old

Minimum Academic Entry Requiremen

  • Any 3 ‘A’ level subjects with Grades B, C and C or the International Baccalaureate (28 points) or equivalent High School/Year 12 qualification OR
  • Polytechnic Diploma in a non-relevant field, OR
  • Students with 2 ‘A’ level subjects may enter via the ACCA 'Fundamental papers F1-F6 (or part thereof), students may be eligible for entry/exemption
AND
  • Applicants must hold GCSE Mathematics at minimum grade C (or equivalent) and English Language at minimum grade C (or equivalent) or an IELTS score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5 (or equivalent English language qualifications).
Mature applicants

To be considered for mature entry you will be required to meet the following criteria:
  • Be aged 30 or over with 8 years of relevant experience
  • Unable to meet the standard entry criteria for Professional Certificate in Banking (PCertB)
As a mature applicant, you are required to submit a current CV supported by a 500 to 600 word statement indicating why you have chosen to undertake the programme and how it will support your career plans. If you do not meet the minimum entry criteria for GCSE (or equivalent) in Mathematics you should briefly describe your Mathematical ability as part of your statement. If invited to progress an interview may be held.

You may be required to successfully complete the Financial Markets and Risk module as Continued Professional Development, prior to being accepted into the programme.
