Course introduction

Introduction


Coleman College offers Certificate in English for Foreigners courses in different levels for international students who wish to acquire a good foundation in this international language. They are categorized into Basic, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Higher Intermediate and Advanced Levels.

The Certificate in English for Foreigners course will equip students with a good foundation in the English language which will enable them to build and enhance their reading, writing, listening and speaking ability in English.

At each level, students will be able to grasp the intended key outcomes. From learning grammar and commonly used words to cultivating basic communication skills, to building simple structures while developing sufficient vocabulary base through discussions and writings. After completion, students will be able to produce reasonable explanations and arguments on abstract thought and topics.

 



Curriculum Overview


Programme Structure


The programme consists of an English Teaching Module at each level.

Synopsis – Basic Level

This course teaches basic foundation level English. Students will receive listening, speaking, grammar and writing practice. At the end of the course, students will be able to use many regular and irregular verbs, hold basic conversation and write simple written messages.

Synopsis – Elementary, Elementary 1 & 2 Level

This course teaches foundation level English. Students will receive listening, speaking, grammar and writing practice. At the end of the course, students will be able to use many regular and irregular verbs, hold basic conversation on familiar topics and write short written messages.

Synopsis – Pre-Intermediate Level

This course teaches English that prepares the student for intermediate level. Students will receive listening, speaking, grammar and writing practice. At the end of the course, can hold fluent conversations on familiar topics and use Basic English with few or no errors.  They will understand how to write letters and essays using paragraph structures and a variety of grammar and vocabulary.

Synopsis – Intermediate, Intermediate 1 & 2 Level

Students will develop basic academic English skills at this level. Students will be exposed to a range of text types presented in different media that cover many high-frequency words commonly used in academic and work environments. The student also develops skill in writing more articulate paragraphs, letters and essays. Speaking skills are developed in interpersonal activities and through oral presentations.

Synopsis – Higher Intermediate Level

At this level, students begin to express themselves fluently in speech and in writing. Focusing on academic skills, students learn to organize and develop their ideas into well-structured compositions, employing their earlier acquired grammar and vocabulary seamlessly. The selected reading and listening materials continue to expand the student’s vocabulary.  The native level listening materials expose students to various topics.  Various activities improve the student’s discussion and oral presentation skills.

Synopsis – Advanced 1 & 2 Level

At this level students strive for proficiency in all the skill areas required at the university or college level. Students write progressively longer academic essays based on original research. Students learn to participate in seminars and further refine their skills in public speaking.


Assessment

Assessments may consist of:

  • end term level tests,
  • unit or progressive tests,
  • quizzes,
  • speeches,
  • interviews and
  • homework.

*Students (both International and local) must achieve an attendance rate of 80% and above in order to qualify for examinations.
 



Entry Requirements


Age  At least 7 years old
Academic At least Primary 1 education for applicant between ages 7- 17.
For applicant 18 years and above, at least completed Grade 7 or Secondary 1 or equivalent
English Proficiency At least Primary 1 proficiency in English and student will be emplaced based on placement test
