Course introduction

Nurturing your very own mini edible garden is easy, as long as you know how to;
i) Formulate the soil, substrate and compost mix for various plant species.
ii) Map and plan irrigation channels for the various plant species in your mini edible garden.
iii) Provide the right nourishment and care to promote growth and healthy plants.



Course Outline


Learning outcome #1
Learners will be able to identify various plant species and prepare planting layout plans based on the plant species
Planting layout guidelines for different plant species 
Prepare planting plans accordingly to planting requirements 
Determine planting layouts with spatial considerations for plant growth requirements 

Learning outcome #2
Learners will be able to formulate the soil, substrate and compost mix for various plant species and the equipment and tools required to plant the various plant species.
Amounts and mixing proportions of fertilisers and chemicals for different plants 
Determine tools and equipment to be used for planting

Learning outcome #3
Learners will be able to plant and provide care for plants in a safe manner.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) required for horticultural tasks
Relevant workplace safety and health (WSH) guidelines 
Supervise adherence to relevant WSH guidelines in the performance of horticultural tasks by the team 

Learning outcome #4
Learners will be able to supervise the planting of the plants.
Planting and post planting procedures 
Supervise planting activities accordingly to established procedures

Learning outcome #5
Learners will be able to provide nourishment to promote growth and healthy plants.
Benefits of specific types of mulches and other organic materials for plant growth 
Determine mulches and other organic materials to be added to the planted areas to promote plant health and growth 
Guide the usage of chemicals and fertilisers to meet plant health and growth requirements 

Learning outcome #6
Learners will be able to determine the ideal irrigation requirements for various plant types.
Irrigation requirements of commonly planted species 
Establish irrigation and maintenance schedules for different plants 

Learning outcome #7
Learners will be able to provide post-planting care for the plant.
Post-planting aftercare requirements for different plants 
Review aftercare activities
