Course introduction

This course focuses on introducing basic medical terminologies to hospital staff with little or no knowledge of the commonly used medical terms in their area of work.

This course aims to equip the learners with the foundation knowledge of medical terminologies and abbreviations that are commonly used in the hospital.

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand principles of medical terminology
  2. Describe basic medical terminology and abbreviations commonly used in healthcare
  3. Demonstrate competence in using root words, prefixes and suffixes.
  4. Apply appropriate medical terms to describe human anatomy, medical conditions, common diagnostics and management



Course Outline


  • Understand basic human anatomy
  • Exploring the unknown – root words, prefixes, suffixes to describe medical condition
  • Medical terms and abbreviations pertaining to diseases of the heart and blood vessels (hypertension, heart attack, etc)
  • Medical terms and abbreviations pertaining to diseases of the gastrointestinal system (gastrointestinal bleeding, GERD, hepatitis, cirrhosis, etc)
  • Medical terms and abbreviations pertaining to diseases of the respiratory system (asthma, pneumonia, COPD, etc)
  • Medical terms and abbreviations pertaining to diseases of the endocrine system (diabetes, thyroid problems, etc)
  • Medical terms and abbreviations pertaining to diseases of the genitourinary system (renal failure, renal stones, etc)
  • Medical terms and abbreviations pertaining to diseases of the nervous system (stroke, meningitis, etc)
