Course introduction

Computer Vision and Image Processing play very important roles in fields such as Machine and Robot Intelligence. They provide the means for the machine or robot to interact intelligently with the outside world through visual perception. Vision is undoubtedly the most powerful of all senses and enables robots to perform very flexible tasks such as moving around autonomously in a factory floor or outdoors. The applications are plentiful and very challenging. Face recognition, human activity interpretations, human-computer interaction, quality inspection of mass-produced parts, robot/missile/vehicle guidance, medical imaging and computer vision-aided surgery are some of these applications. The objective of this course is to prepare students for working in such intelligent automation fields. Course content covers image representation, preprocessing techniques, segmentation and representation, recognition and machine intelligence and Machine vision applications.

Course Outline

Acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to understand and implement the various image processing algorithms (such as edge detection, feature extraction and forms of representation), camera geometry, pattern recognition theory and machine learning.
