Course introduction

Introduction

Since the beginning of 1980s there has been tremendous growing, if not sporadically, interest in strategic approaches to the inventory control and materials management with emphasis on the scope of pro-activity. The creative coining words like, supply-chain management, outsourcing logistics, third party warehousing, materials resource engineering, although in the same faculty of inventory control and materials management have added greater awareness, demand and accountability by top management on the professional practitioners.

This has inadvertently opened up new frontier in the perceptions of the materials man. The question will no longer be, what does the management of materials do for a company rather what can an effective management of materials do to a company? The new millennium will require the materials man to consider, focus and conceptualize a clear strategic approach to achieve the expectation and demands of the company.
