Course introduction

This level focuses on spoken English at elementary level. It is for trainees who have very basic understanding of spoken and written English. At the end of the course, the trainees should be able to speak using simple sentences, read everyday authentic texts, and interpret road and safety signs and symbols.

Basic understanding of the English language



Course Outline


1. Language Structure

  • The English Alphabet ; A to Z.
  • Pronunciation ; Consonant clusters, vowel sounds etc
  • Punctuations & Symbols ; Full stop, comma, semi-colon etc.
  • Grammar ; Tenses, nouns, adjectives etc.
2. Speaking
  • Meeting people; Greetings, How to introduce oneself etc.
  • Asking questions; Using why questions and how.
  • Giving simple instructions; Using sequencers; First(ly), Then, Next etc.
  • Expressing simple thoughts; Using simple sentences.
  • Common everyday phrases; Hi, Hello, Good morning, Have a nice day, Excuse me etc.
3. Reading
  • Comprehension passages; Short reading passages.
  • Picture composition; Using pictures to write simple sentences.
  • Safety Signs and Symbols; Identify safety signs & symbols e.g. Warnings, Escape route etc.
  • Road Signs and Symbols; Understand what they mean e.g. U-Turn, Left lane etc.
4. Tests
  • Oral and written
  • Listening skills
Non-compulsory pre-course test is available upon request at no charge.

Award Criteria

Students, who satisfy the minimum attendance requirements (75%) will be issued with certificate of attendance by BMC
